Prototype

Once we have the concept document clearly defined and we are happy with it, we can dive into the design process.

At this stage, the design process is conformed by 4 main steps:

  1. Formalise your idea into a prototype
  2. Test the prototype
  3. Evaluate
  4. Repeat

So first thing I did was to create a prototype in Unity that allowed me to test the main mechanics of the game I thought. For that purpose no assets are needed,  so the game doesn't look beautiful. Just the basics, nothing more nothing less.

So I created very quickly a scenario in Unity that contained some blocks, flippers and a ball, I coded some logic and boom, prototype.ç

The video above is the prototype I build in some hours. As you can see it looks pretty simple, put it in some way, but I worked.  And that was the only thing I needed. At this point I didn't add yet the core mechanic of music and unfortunately when I did it I did not recorded a video, but you can make an idea.

Thanks to this prototype I could see many things and started to have thousands of doubts about things that I didn't consider in the concept document like, do I want to have gravity? (one of the ideas was to give some outer space appearance to the game). Isn't the ball moving too fast? Etc.

Everything that came to my mind at this point was written down in my notebook so in the next iteration was change/fixed/removed/added into the prototype. And the process started again.

At some point things just worked. You start to realize that what you're testing it's actually fun, you see the potential. You start to be happy with it. So at this point I decided to move forward.
